His regular patrons were waiting quietly outside in the cold, silent pre-dawn dark lined up for their candy: the elderly Latino men with their pockmarked, leathery faces, the angry, tough talking street homeboys, the hookers – some of ‘em real niiiice chicas.

The Candy Man, Rico Estavez, had been servicing the narcotic needs of the East Los Angeles community for many years. His crack house started out as a clearinghouse for migrants smuggled up north by the coyotes, the human flesh smugglers.

Having managed to steer clear of local politics with the Bloods and Crips, the Candy Man got in on the drug trade before is was fashionable to just say “no”.

He was also one of the few drug dealers who back in the day was successful at manufacturing crystal methamphetamine.

He’d laugh and say, “Ice and crack candy, bay-beee.”
