The answer to both questions would be to analyze what happened. Mom was a doctor of forensics and could handle all the unusual and gross stuff pretty well.
“What we have here, Mr. Brighton, is some average-sized (please don’t be big), unknown creature that has a stink about it.”
Why wasn’t the stink on the sleeping bag?
“First we gotta isolate the smell. It ain’t skunk. Not cat or dog.”
Patrick leaned forward and sniffed again. He heard other people mucking about in their tents. With the noise of the other scouts, Patrick felt assured that this critter wouldn’t be coming back.
