Patrick quietly unzipped this sleeping bag. He peered into the darkness, saw nothing and fingered around for his flashlight. He held his breath.

A moaning sound upset the cadence of the stream.

He exhaled and strained his hearing.

Moaning. Then a quiet, subtle clawing against a tree.

The tent was darker than the inside of a dirty boot.

The Baker was open by Patrick and Dan’s feet. There was no floor to the tent. The scout campgrounds were especially black tonight since there was no moon and the clouds effectively shut out the stars.

There were no flaps for the tent by the boys’ feet. They were the new scouts so they didn’t get their dibs on the tents with the floors. Their bedding was simple, consisting of a plastic ground cloth and their sleeping bags. There were no campfires since it was very early in the morning . There was no glow from night sky lights since they were miles away from the nearest city.
