Tenderfoot
September 4, 1989
Northwest Star Scout Camp 3:00 AM
Ninety minutes before Rico Estavez was murdered, Patrick Brighton bolted upright in his Holofil sleeping bag. Something was scrunching the brown leaves outside his blackened Baker tent. He looked at his watch. The luminous hands of his chronometer displayed three zero zero.
He thought he was listening to the sounds of the older, Second Class, First Class and Eagle Scouts as they were positioning themselves for some new form of outdoor ambush for the eleven year-old Tenderfoot.
Being initiated into Troop 240 sucked.
When Nick Saffold told him earlier things like, “The other guys left me tied naked to a Joshua tree and left me there overnight,” Patrick got more and more terrified.
