Like the stuff Mom used on some of the stiffs. The pants smelled like formaldehyde and some kind of animal.

But definitely formaldehyde.

What kind of animal smelled of formaldehyde? It was used to preserve dead things. And what was it doing on his pants and not his sleeping bag?

“There’s a rational explanation for all of this. I’m sure as soon as I figure out what it is I’ll feel like a real dweeb for feeling so scared.”

It had to be some kid.

It just had to be.

There was a scratching outside the tent.
