“Could the cat or scout have climbed the tree?” he asked himself. “The limbs don’t look strong enough on the tree to support anything.”

He shined his light upwards through the cones. The campground was chosen for its beauty and for its trees. It was one of the few sites where one didn’t have to worry about the fire line and starting a forest fire. The cones converged into a dark mass and Patrick couldn’t make out a thing.

Behind him, something splashed in the stream.

Patrick whirled and thought he caught a glimpse of something.

Whatever it was, it wasn’t in the beam of his flashlight. Patrick was tense again. He wasn’t a momma’s boy, but he wished she were with him right now.

“Mom always had all that rational, make sense stuff for everything.”
