Patrick didn’t hear or smell the thing anymore. He knew though that the other scouts were masters of psychological torture that would rival the CIA and KGB and he should face his fears. Patrick rolled open his unzipped sleeping bag, snaked towards his feet and leaned very slowly out the back of the tent, listening.

Just the stream.

Mom was right (as usual). One’s fears vanish when confronted. Patrick shined the light around the outside of the tent and slowly rose to his feet. He inspected the tent and its lashings. The wooden poles were in place. The stakes and lines were securely fastened. He paused to relax the tension from his shoulders.

Something scampered from behind him.

Patrick whirled and aimed his light in the direction of the sound. It was from the Silver Pine tree. The reddish tree had grown at an angle along the slope and its branches were covered with ling, slender purple cones. The light failed to disclose anything remotely out of place.
