It moved closer.

“Danny, get up.”

Danny was out of it. Between his initiation and the day’s Camporee activities he could sleep through an earthquake. In fact, his mother said that he did once.

Patrick thought about turning on his light outside the tent. Maybe the boys or potential cougar could be spooked. But the cats never came down this far on the hills.

“This scout (or cat) knows that I am on to it.”

Patrick aimed the flashlight through the opening of the tent by his feet. He nervously drummed his finger on the sliding switch of the Eveready light.

If it were the boys, he’d have the element of surprise on his side for a change. He took the precaution of going to bed fully dressed the night before.
